Volvo Cars Reports August Sales Decline, Electric Vehicle Sales Drop Sharply

Sep 04, 2025, 4:26 a.m. ET

AsianFin -- Volvo Cars, the Sweden-based automaker majority-owned by China’s Geely, reported a 9% decline in global sales for August, delivering 48,029 vehicles compared with the same month last year, the company said Thursday.

The automaker said sales of fully electric vehicles fell 28%, accounting for just 20% of total volumes. Meanwhile, sales of electrified vehicles overall—including plug-in hybrids—dropped 17%, representing 43% of total deliveries.

Volvo has faced mounting headwinds in recent months. In July, the company posted a sharp decline in quarterly profit, citing soft and volatile demand, weakening consumer confidence, and new tariffs that continue to challenge the global auto industry.

The sales figures underscore the continued pressure on automakers navigating a slowing market, rising costs, and a shift toward electrification, even for established brands like Volvo.
