AsianFin -- Diplomats in Southeast Asia were reportedly targeted earlier this year by a cyber espionage campaign linked to China, Google announced Tuesday, noting that the group is “likely aligned with the strategic interests” of the Chinese government.

According to a blog post from Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, the March campaign involved hijacking target web traffic, downloading malware, and ultimately deploying a backdoor to infiltrate systems. Google said it issued alerts to all users affected by the campaign. The company did not specify the exact countries or the full scope of the impact. CNN has reached out to Google for additional details.

When asked about the report, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said it was unaware of the specific situation and accused Google of repeatedly spreading “false information about so-called ‘Chinese hacker attacks.’”
