India Faces Export Shock as U.S. Tariffs Hit Key Goods

Aug 27, 2025, 12:25 a.m. ET

AsianFin -- India is preparing for a major disruption to its overseas trade as new U.S. tariffs take effect Wednesday, targeting a wide range of Indian products. The measures threaten more than half of India’s exports to its largest trading partner and underscore the fragile state of bilateral trade relations.

U.S. President Donald Trump initially announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods. Earlier this month, he signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% levy in response to India’s purchases of Russian oil, effectively raising the total U.S. tariffs on Indian products to 50%.
