AsianFin -- U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced Tuesday that the department will begin publishing economic data “on the blockchain,” marking the Trump administration’s latest nod to the cryptocurrency sector.

“The Department of Commerce is going to start issuing its statistics on the blockchain, because you are the crypto president,” Lutnick told President Donald Trump during a cabinet meeting.

Lutnick explained that GDP data will be distributed via blockchain, with plans to expand the initiative across the federal government.

Details remain scarce, however. It is not yet clear which blockchain network will be used or how the move will benefit the Commerce Department or other government agencies.
