AsianFin -- Tesla is facing a federal investigation over whether it delayed reporting crashes involving its driver-assistance technology, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Wednesday.
The agency is examining whether Tesla complied with regulations requiring prompt notification of crashes involving certain driver-assistance features. NHTSA noted that many reported crashes occurred months before Tesla submitted official reports, which are typically required within one to five days of learning about an incident.
The probe centers on Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot, designed for limited-access highways, and its “Full Self Driving” system, intended to operate on both highways and city streets. Both features are meant to be used only with a driver actively monitoring the road and ready to take control.
