India’s State Refiners Resume Russian Oil Purchases After Brief Pause Despite U.S. Pressure

AsianFin -- India’s state-owned refiners have resumed purchases of Russian crude after a short break, even as the country faces higher trade tariffs and mounting criticism from the Trump administration.

Indian Oil Corp. and Bharat Petroleum Corp. have recently purchased several cargoes of Russia’s Urals grade for September and October loading, traders familiar with the deals said, requesting anonymity because they aren’t authorized to speak publicly.

The move comes after state refiners temporarily halted Russian oil imports earlier this month, following President Donald Trump’s sharp criticism of India’s role in sustaining Moscow’s energy trade. Trump had threatened economic penalties, prompting New Delhi to instruct refiners in late July to prepare contingency plans in case Russian supplies were cut off.
