Trump Urges China to Quadruple U.S. Soybean Purchases to Cut Trade Deficit

Aug 11, 2025, 2:34 a.m. ET

AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Sunday that China would soon quadruple its soybean imports from the United States, framing the move as a significant step toward narrowing Beijing’s trade deficit with Washington.

“China is facing a soybean shortage. Our farmers produce the most resilient soybeans. I hope China will quickly increase its orders fourfold,” Trump said on Truth Social, adding that rapid delivery services would be arranged. He also thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for ongoing cooperation.

The tariff truce between the U.S. and China, currently set to expire on August 12, may be extended as both sides continue negotiations.

China dominates global soybean demand, accounting for over 60% of shipments worldwide, sourcing primarily from Brazil and the United States.
