BEIJING, October 16 (AsianFin) – Taiwan-based chip maker TSMC’s founder Morris Chang said on Saturday that Taiwan’s environment for making chips in two or three decades may not be as favorable as right now with the evolution of regional economic dynamics. Zhang pointed out that globalization and free trade are gone in terms of the semi-conductor industry. The primary factor in the industry is “national security” and other companies may leverage geopolitical advantages to beat TSMC. He did not specify which companies have advantages in terms of "national security." He noted that Japan is a suitable place to build a chip supply chain as many countries are vying to do so. Zhang was upbeat about the future of Japan’s semi-conductor industry. He said he saw Kyushu in Japan on a work trip as an employee of Texas Instruments about fifty years ago. He believes that both Singapore and Japan are good places to make chips. Singapore has less resources compared with Japan. Kyushu has sufficient land, water and electricity supply as well as strong work ethics.
