AsianFin -- A Florida jury has ordered Tesla Inc. to pay approximately $243 million in damages over a fatal 2019 crash involving a Model S equipped with the company’s Autopilot system. The verdict marks one of the largest penalties levied against Tesla to date in an Autopilot-related lawsuit.
The jury found Tesla partially liable for the accident, assigning 33% of the responsibility to the electric vehicle maker. The award includes $129 million in compensatory damages to the family of the deceased and an injured survivor, as well as $200 million in punitive damages aimed at penalizing Tesla’s alleged negligence.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded swiftly, announcing that the company will appeal the jury’s decision. “We respectfully disagree with the verdict and will be appealing the ruling,” Musk said, emphasizing Tesla’s commitment to safety and its belief that the vehicle’s Autopilot system was not at fault.
