China’s Cyber Regulator Summons Nvidia Over Security Risks in H20 AI Chips

Jul 31, 2025, 1:07 a.m. ET

AsianFin -- China’s top internet watchdog has summoned U.S. chipmaker Nvidia over national security concerns tied to its H20 artificial intelligence processors, citing alleged backdoor vulnerabilities and data risks.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said it conducted a formal interview with Nvidia on July 31, demanding the company provide a detailed explanation and supporting documentation regarding security loopholes in its China-bound H20 AI chips.

The move follows media reports and expert claims that Nvidia’s chips could include advanced “tracking” and “remote shutdown” functions. U.S. lawmakers have previously pushed for such technologies to be embedded in AI chips exported to strategic competitors, raising red flags in China over potential surveillance and data control risks.
