“Panshi” Foundation Model Unveiled to Empower Cross-Disciplinary Scientific Research

Jul 28, 2025, 11:07 p.m. ET

AsianFin— The “Panshi” scientific foundation model, independently developed by a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was officially introduced at the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference. Designed specifically for scientists, the model aims to facilitate cross-disciplinary research.

“Panshi” integrates core capabilities such as scientific literature extraction and fusion, knowledge representation and reasoning, and scientific tool orchestration and planning. It supports the entire research workflow—from hypothesis generation and experimental design to simulation, validation, and discovery of scientific laws—acting as an AI-powered interdisciplinary research assistant.

Built on a domestic open-source large model, “Panshi” is deeply customized for the scientific domain, mastering key theorems, laws, and specialized knowledge across six major disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, biology, and life sciences.

Leveraging this model, the development team has also created two scientific intelligent agents—Literature Compass and Tool Scheduler—to assist researchers in various aspects of their work.
