AsianFin -- Indonesia is still working through the details of a recently announced trade agreement with the United States, including efforts to secure exemptions for key exports such as palm oil and nickel, a senior official said Friday.
The deal, which lowered a proposed U.S. tariff rate on Indonesian goods to 19% from an initial 32%, was one of only a few agreements finalized by the Trump administration ahead of the August 1 negotiation deadline.
Susiwijono Moegiarso, a top official at Indonesia’s coordinating ministry for economic affairs, said talks are ongoing and that the 19% tariff would be applied on top of existing sector-specific duties. He noted that Jakarta is actively pushing for relief on strategic commodities as part of the ongoing discussions.
