Trump Plans 10%+ Tariffs on Over 100 Smaller Nations, Including in Africa and the Caribbean

AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he plans to impose tariffs of more than 10% on a broad group of smaller trading partners, including countries across Africa and the Caribbean, as part of his widening global trade offensive.

“We’ll probably set one tariff for all of them,” Trump told reporters, adding the rate would likely be “a little over 10%” and apply to goods from at least 100 nations.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick clarified that the targeted countries include those that conduct relatively limited trade with the U.S., such as many in the Caribbean and Africa. The administration argues the move is aimed at simplifying tariff structures and exerting broader leverage, though it may have limited impact on narrowing the overall U.S. trade deficit.

Trump has been escalating his tariff campaign this month, sending letters to more than two dozen countries and the European Union outlining new duties set to take effect on August 1. The blanket approach signals a more aggressive turn in Trump’s trade agenda as he eyes sweeping changes to the U.S. global trade posture.
