AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has struck a trade agreement with Indonesia that will impose a 19% tariff on the country’s exports while eliminating all duties on American goods, as part of a broader deal that includes major purchases of U.S. products.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the Southeast Asian nation has agreed to buy more than $19 billion worth of American goods, including 50 aircraft from Boeing Co. “We are going to have full access to Indonesia,” Trump said. “They are paying 19% and we are not paying anything.”
In a follow-up post on social media, Trump detailed the purchases, saying Indonesia would buy $15 billion in U.S. energy products and $4.5 billion in agricultural goods. He added that many of the Boeing planes ordered would be 777 widebody jets.
Details and timing of the purchases were not disclosed, and Indonesian officials have not confirmed the tariff terms. Nonetheless, the market reacted positively, with Indonesia’s benchmark stock index rising 0.6% at the open on Wednesday.
