AsianFin -- General Motors said it plans to manufacture low-cost batteries at its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant through Ultium Cells, its joint venture with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution. The move builds on the companies’ previously announced $2.3 billion investment in 2021.
In addition to the currently mass-produced nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NCMA) pouch batteries, the facility will soon begin constructing a production line for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. GM expects full-scale LFP battery production to begin by the end of 2027.
