White House Signals Possible Extension for Tariff Deadlines With Select Countries

Jul 06, 2025, 10:38 p.m. ET

AsianFin – As the deadline for finalizing trade deals approaches, White House Council of Economic Advisers Chair Stephen Milan suggested that the U.S. may delay tariff implementation for countries engaged in “good-faith negotiations” with Washington.

When asked whether U.S. President Donald Trump would extend the deadline, Milan said it was possible, noting that countries making the necessary concessions to reach an agreement but needing more time could be granted an extended timeline. He declined to specify which countries might receive such extensions.

Milan added that nations showing flexibility in negotiations could see their deadlines pushed back, while those that are not making meaningful progress are likely to face higher tariffs. He said Trump is expected to make decisions later this week and beyond on whether certain countries are taking the “customary” steps required to maintain access to the U.S. market.
