Trump Blasts Fed Chair Powell for Keeping Rates ‘Artificially High’

AsianFin -- Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, accusing him of maintaining interest rates at “artificially high” levels and calling him a “bad person.”

In an interview with Fox News, the U.S. president blamed Powell for saddling the government with elevated borrowing costs by keeping the benchmark interest rate at 4.5% since December.

“We should be at 1% or 2%,” Trump said, signaling his intention to install a new Fed chair who would pursue lower rates if he returns to office. “I’m looking forward to getting somebody into the Fed who is going to be able to lower the rates,” he added.
