AsianFin — The U.S. government is considering a significant expansion of its travel restrictions, potentially barring citizens from 36 additional countries from entering the United States, according to a leaked State Department memo.
The internal memorandum, signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and distributed to U.S. diplomats on June 14, lists 25 African nations—including Egypt, Djibouti, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria—as well as several Caribbean, Asian, and Pacific island countries as potential targets for new visa bans or other entry limitations.
According to the memo, the affected governments have been given 60 days to meet new security and immigration standards set by the U.S. Department of State. They are required to submit preliminary action plans by 8:00 a.m. on June 18.
The move follows a White House announcement earlier this month that imposed a full entry ban on citizens from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Iran, and Yemen. Partial entry restrictions were also placed on citizens of seven additional countries, such as Burundi.
