AsianFin — The U.S. Embassy in Japan has temporarily stopped accepting new student visa interview applications for those planning to study in the United States, according to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Interviews that have already been scheduled will proceed as planned. A source within the ministry cited the U.S. Embassy as saying the move is a “temporary measure” ahead of the implementation of new procedures, including enhanced scrutiny of applicants’ social media activity.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya expressed concern over the decision, stating, “Many of those planning to study in the U.S. are now feeling anxious. We are closely monitoring the situation and have requested that the U.S. side provide sufficient information. We will maintain close communication going forward.”
