Harvard Faces Off Against Trump Administration in Court Over International Student Admissions

May 28, 2025, 10:26 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- A high-stakes courtroom battle between Harvard University and the Trump administration is set to unfold today, as both sides appear before a federal court in a case centered on the government’s attempt to restrict the school’s ability to admit international students.

The lawsuit, filed by Harvard, challenges a policy introduced by the Trump administration aimed at limiting the enrollment of foreign students at U.S. universities. U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs, who is presiding over the case, issued a temporary restraining order on May 23 to block the administration’s policy from taking effect.

Today’s hearing is expected to focus on whether that temporary restraining order should be extended while the case proceeds.

Legal experts view the outcome as a bellwether for broader tensions between elite academic institutions and government immigration policies, particularly as international enrollment remains a vital component of American higher education.
