China Regulator to Meet Automakers Over Rise in 'Zero-Mileage' Used Car Sales

May 26, 2025, 11:58 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- China’s Ministry of Commerce will convene a meeting on Tuesday afternoon with major automakers and industry associations, including BYD and Dongfeng Motor, to address the growing sale of “used cars” that have never been driven, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter.

The meeting follows recent remarks by Great Wall Motor Chairman Wei Jianjun, who told Sina Finance that a new trend has emerged in China’s auto market: “zero-mileage used cars.” These are vehicles that have been registered and issued license plates—qualifying them as sold—but have never actually been used on the road.

Wei noted that the phenomenon is a byproduct of a prolonged price war in the auto industry. He estimated that thousands of vendors—between 3,000 and 4,000—are currently selling such vehicles on Chinese used car platforms.
