U.S. Launches National Security Probe into BYD's Ties to Chinese Communist Party

May 24, 2025, 5:35 a.m. ET

AsianFin — The U.S. House Homeland Security Committee has opened a formal investigation into Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD, focusing on the company's potential links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the possible threat it may pose to U.S. national security.

According to people familiar with the matter, the committee is scrutinizing BYD’s ownership structure, government support, and data practices as part of a broader effort to assess the security risks associated with Chinese technology firms operating globally.

The committee has formally requested BYD to submit relevant documentation no later than June 9.

The investigation adds to growing bipartisan concerns in Washington over China’s influence in critical supply chains and emerging technologies, particularly in sectors like electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. BYD, backed by investor Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, has rapidly expanded its global footprint, including in Latin America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

A BYD spokesperson has not yet commented on the investigation.
