Trump Weighs Public Offering for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

May 21, 2025, 11:20 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is “giving very serious consideration” to taking mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac public, signaling a possible revival of efforts to privatize the government-controlled firms.

“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are doing very well, throwing off a lot of CASH, and the time would seem to be right,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He added that he plans to consult with key administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte, before making a final decision.

The comments come as the two companies continue to generate significant earnings under federal conservatorship, heightening speculation over their long-debated exit from government control.
