AsianFin -- Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has become the top-selling car brand in Singapore so far this year, surpassing long-time leader Toyota for the first time, according to government data.

Between January and April 2025, BYD sold 3,002 vehicles, capturing 20% of the market. In comparison, Toyota sold 2,050 units, while Tesla, BYD’s key EV rival, moved 535 cars during the same period.

Toyota was previously the dominant brand in the city-state, selling 7,876 vehicles in 2024, ahead of BYD’s 6,191 units. Singapore tightly regulates its vehicle population through a costly certificate system, making the market highly competitive.

BYD’s strong performance in Singapore highlights its accelerating global push as it faces intense price competition at home. Reuters recently reported that BYD aims to sell half of its vehicles overseas by 2030—an ambitious goal that would put it on par with the world’s largest automakers.
