AsianFin -- OpenAI has reportedly agreed to purchase Windsurf, an artificial intelligence-assisted coding tool formerly known as Codeium, in a deal valued at approximately $3 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The acquisition, if finalized, would mark OpenAI’s largest deal to date and bolster its position in the competitive market for AI-driven coding assistants.
The chatbot maker aims to strengthen its capabilities in systems capable of tasks like generating code based on natural language prompts, intensifying competition with rivals in the rapidly growing AI tools sector.
While the deal has not yet closed, sources, who requested anonymity to discuss private negotiations, confirmed the agreement. Both OpenAI and Windsurf declined to comment.
This acquisition follows earlier reports by Bloomberg News that the companies were in discussions about a potential buyout.
