Walmart Asks Chinese Suppliers to Resume Shipments Despite Tariff Hikes

Apr 28, 2025, 11:16 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- Some manufacturers in China’s Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces — key export hubs hit hard by the US-China trade war — have been instructed by Walmart and other major US retailers to resume shipments in recent days, the Post reported.

A major exporter of stationery and office products based in the eastern city of Ningbo said it received a notification from Walmart on Monday to restart normal deliveries to the United States. This comes just weeks after a series of tit-for-tat tariff increases between the world’s two largest economies had slowed shipments to a near halt.

According to the company, the added costs from new US import duties will be absorbed by American clients, rather than Chinese exporters.

“We have been told by our long-time partner Walmart to start shipping more [to the US], and we won’t need to bear the extra costs of the new tariffs [on Chinese goods],” the firm’s vice-president told the Post on Monday.

At least one exporter in Jiangsu province has also been asked to prepare for a recovery in demand.
