AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday floated the idea of cutting income taxes for Americans earning less than $200,000 a year, suggesting the move could help ease the economic strain from his proposed tariffs.
Trump has previously claimed that revenue generated from tariffs could offset or even replace income taxes, though many economists have cast doubt on the feasibility of that approach.
“When Tariffs kick in, many people’s Income Taxes will be substantially reduced, maybe even completely eliminated. Focus will be on people making less than $200,000 a year,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
His tariff proposals have sparked market volatility, raised fears of higher consumer prices, and fueled concerns about a potential U.S. recession — worries that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed in a Sunday interview.
