Trump Administration Urges Europe to Scrap AI Rulebook

Apr 26, 2025, 10:19 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- The Trump administration is pressuring Europe to abandon a proposed AI rulebook that would require developers of advanced artificial intelligence systems to adhere to stricter standards on transparency, risk mitigation, and copyright compliance.

In recent weeks, the U.S. Mission to the European Union contacted the European Commission, urging it to reconsider the AI code of practice, according to people familiar with the matter. The outreach, which included letters to several European governments, raised concerns about the code’s current form. European Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier confirmed receipt of the communication in response to questions from Bloomberg.

Although the AI code is voluntary, it is designed to guide tech companies in aligning with the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act. Violations of the AI Act could trigger fines of up to 7% of a company’s annual revenue, with developers of advanced AI models facing penalties of up to 3%. Companies that choose to ignore the code may also face heightened regulatory scrutiny.
