AsianFin -- Japan is determined to resist any U.S. effort to incorporate it into an economic bloc aimed at countering China, according to current and former Japanese government officials.
The country views its trade relations with Beijing as critically important and is prioritizing maintaining strong economic ties with its largest trading partner.
Like many nations, Japan is seeking permanent relief from President Donald Trump’s tariffs by addressing U.S. concerns in key areas of bilateral trade, including automobiles and agriculture. Speaking anonymously, Japanese officials emphasized that Tokyo is working to secure a trade deal before the current 90-day tariff reprieve expires. One official noted that Japan aims to finalize an agreement around the time of the Group of Seven summit in June.
The move underscores Japan’s delicate balancing act, as it navigates its close partnership with the U.S. while safeguarding its economic interests with China.
