DHL to Pause U.S. Consumer Shipments Over $800 Amid Stricter Customs Rules

AsianFin -- DHL Express, the international courier arm of Germany’s Deutsche Post, will temporarily suspend global shipments valued above $800 destined for individual consumers in the United States starting April 21, citing recent U.S. customs rule changes that have complicated the clearance process.

According to a notice posted on DHL’s website—compiled on Saturday per its metadata—the suspension stems from a regulatory shift that now requires formal customs entry for all imports over $800. Previously, this threshold was set at $2,500. The updated rules, which took effect on April 5, have significantly increased the processing burden, particularly for high-value shipments to individuals.

The logistics firm clarified that business-to-business (B2B) shipments are not subject to the suspension, though they may experience delays due to the same regulatory adjustments. Shipments under $800, whether to consumers or businesses, will continue as usual.

DHL emphasized that the pause is a “temporary measure” while it assesses how to adapt its operations to comply with the new customs requirements.

In a separate statement last week responding to Reuters, the company said it would continue handling shipments from Hong Kong to the U.S. “in accordance with the applicable customs rules and regulations” and would collaborate with customers to help them adjust to additional changes expected to take effect on May 2.
