Google to Shut Down Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Shifting Development In-House

Mar 27, 2025, 2:37 a.m. ET

AsianFin – Google has confirmed it will discontinue maintenance of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), moving all future Android development exclusively to internal teams, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Starting next week, Android’s development will transition entirely to Google’s private repositories, with AOSP’s Continuous Integration/Delivery (CI/CD) tools and Android Gerrit code review system likely to be shut down. The move effectively ends external access to AOSP’s core development branches, making Android’s evolution opaque to outsiders for the first time since its 2008 launch.
