The domestic film market in China continues to see a shift towards lower-tier cities. Fourth-tier cities have emerged as a key engine of growth. As of 4:30 PM on February 4, fourth-tier cities accounted for 33.56 billion yuan in box office earnings during the 2025 Chinese New Year period, which represents 37% of the total market share. These cities also saw 65.72 million moviegoers, marking a 44% increase in box office earnings compared to 2024 and a 37% rise in ticket sales. Average ticket prices in these cities have broken the 51 yuan mark for the first time, reflecting both consumption upgrades and market expansion in lower-tier cities.
In contrast, while first-tier cities have an average ticket price of nearly 56 yuan, their box office share has steadily declined from 12% in the 2019 Chinese New Year period to just 10% in 2025. The growth rate in the number of moviegoers in first-tier cities is significantly lower than in fourth-tier cities.
