AsianFin — Alibaba Group Holding's latest Qwen AI model has overtaken DeepSeek-V3 to become the top-ranked non-reasoning model from a Chinese developer, according to third-party benchmarking platform Chatbot Arena. This marks a significant milestone in the rapid progress of Chinese companies in the field of artificial intelligence.
Launched during the Chinese New Year holiday, Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen2.5-Max now holds the seventh spot on Chatbot Arena, a benchmarking project by UC Berkeley computer scientists to evaluate the performance of large language models (LLMs)—the core technology behind chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The rankings are based on user votes assessing the quality of the AI model’s output. DeepSeek-V3, the AI model released by the Chinese startup DeepSeek in late December, is currently ranked ninth.
This rapid rise of Chinese AI models showcases the competitive landscape and growing technological prowess in the sector. Alibaba also owns the South China Morning Post.
