OpenAI CEO Describes DeepSeek as an Impressive Model

Jan 28, 2025, 10:46 a.m. ET

AsianFin – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged that DeepSeek’s r1 is an impressive model, particularly developed at a lower cost.

When responding to the popularity of DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence styling itself as a rival to ChatGPT, Altman said that it was "invigorating to have a new competitor," but added that OpenAI will deliver “much better models.”

OpenAI and DeepSeek symbolize the competing efforts to advance artificial intelligence in the U.S. and China, respectively.  The competition is clear, as DeepSeek refers to itself as “challenging OpenAI's Model o1," while Altman is focused on making the U.S. a leader in the AI sector. His comments today recognize the global race to create the most powerful AI models.
