Microsoft No Longer the Exclusive Cloud ServiceProvider for OpenAI

Jan 21, 2025, 11:37 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it will no longer be the exclusive cloud service provider for OpenAI, although it will retain a "first buy" option under OpenAI's new cloud service agreement.

Microsoft gained the rights to be OpenAI's exclusive cloud service provider when Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019. Since then, the two companies have collaborated to build supercomputers in data centers to train OpenAI's models. On Tuesday, Microsoft stated that it still retains exclusive rights to resell OpenAI models on its Azure cloud platform, as well as the rights to reuse OpenAI's intellectual property in its own products. Additionally, both companies announced that their current agreement will be extended until 2030.
