AsianFin -- U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday expressed hope that President-elect Donald Trump would reconsider his proposal to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, warning that such a move could harm relationships with key allies.
"I hope he rethinks it. I believe it’s counterproductive," Biden said while speaking to reporters in Nantucket, Massachusetts, where he is spending Thanksgiving with his family.
Biden emphasized the unique geopolitical position of the United States, surrounded by oceans and bordered by two allied nations. "The last thing we need is to jeopardize those relationships," he added.
Earlier this week, Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico unless they took stronger actions to curb drug trafficking and illegal migration across the U.S. border. The proposal has raised concerns over potential violations of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free-trade agreement.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, in a statement on Thursday, said tariffs were not discussed during her recent phone call with Trump. She added that the conversation focused on maintaining strong bilateral relations.
