AsianFin -- European Union envoys are set to discuss a 15th sanctions package on Wednesday in response to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The proposed measures include targeting tankers transporting Russian oil and Chinese companies allegedly aiding Moscow's drone production, EU diplomats revealed.
The draft package outlines the addition of 29 entities and 54 individuals to the current sanctions list, which already includes over 2,200 targets. Those listed face asset freezes and travel bans across the EU’s 27 member states. Diplomats anticipate little opposition to the proposals.
A broader sanctions package is expected in January when Poland assumes the EU’s rotating presidency from Hungary. Hungary's leader, known for his Russia-friendly stance, has previously delayed or blocked measures aimed at supporting Ukraine.
The move to include 48 tankers in the sanctions list aligns with Western efforts to curb Russian oil revenues by bolstering the Group of Seven (G7) price cap on Russian oil. Officials acknowledge the cap’s effectiveness has diminished since its introduction in late 2022.
Meanwhile, Reuters has reported that Russia has established a weapons program in China to develop and manufacture long-range attack drones, raising concerns about cross-border collaboration.
Looking ahead, the 16th sanctions package is expected to tighten restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and expand the use of the "No Russia" clause, which would prevent EU subsidiaries in third countries from re-exporting certain goods to Russia.
